Youth Volunteers Create a Desi Dhamaka!

On Saturday, April 19th, SEF, USA’s youth volunteers joined volunteers from ‘Indians 4 a Change’, a Bay Area-based student-run non-profit with chapters at Dougherty Valley High School (DVHS) and California High School, San Ramon, CA. Together, they hosted the Desi Dhamaka, at the Gale Ranch Middle School.

It was an exciting evening during which they celebrated Indian heritage and culture and raised funds for Sankara Eye Foundation (SEF), USA, which provides free eye surgeries to the underserved in rural India. Anju Desai, SEF, USA Board member, who guided the team, commented, “We’ve long hoped for youth involvement in SEF, USA’s activities, and last Saturday, that hope became a reality! The DVHS SEF, USA Club, and India 4 Change (I4C) students impressed me with their energy and commitment to the cause, balancing many responsibilities without compromising their studies. The event was well-planned and executed, and I enjoyed collaborating with them.”

The Desi Dhamaka featured a live DJ, student performances by the DVHS A cappella Club, henna tattooing by student volunteers, food trucks serving Indian cuisine from Chaat Bhavan Restaurant, caricatures by the DVHS National Art Honors Society, ticket raffles, a photo booth, and more.
