The R. Jhunjhunwala Sankara Eye Hospital, Varanasi, has opened its doors to the people of Uttar Pradesh. It was inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on October 20, 2024. It is a state-of-the-art 225-bed super-specialty eye hospital that will perform 30,000 free eye surgeries annually. The Rakesh Jhunjhunwala Foundation has generously contributed 50% of the land and construction costs as well as the operational costs till self-sufficiency is reached.

The Varanasi hospital’s location is ideally suited to serve people from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Nepal. The hospital will function on a cross-subsidization model wherein the income from paying patients will offset the costs of free surgeries for those in need.
